Sunflowers and Candles: An Early Autumn Table

Sunflower Centerpiece

Every September as the fall season approaches I begin styling our home with sunflower accents.  It is, for me, a fun way to bridge the seasons as these colorful flowers bring a golden warmth to our home without looking too heavy and autumnal for the still very hot weather!

Our dining room table is one of my favorite places to see sunflowers. Since we have a long rectangular table, I use a linear candelabra woven with a sunflower garland as the centerpiece.  Ivory candles are neutral and tie in the light colors found in the dining room but one could easily substitute a rich green or golden yellow.  Every year I collect a few more enhancements for the table design.  For an earlier, less adorned version see this Sunflower Table post.

Silk Sunflower Garland

Silk floral garlands can be used in so many interesting ways and add color and texture to the home.  Here, a contemporary wooden candelabra is shown woven with a garland.  This is an easy centerpiece to make but be sure to keep the garland well away from the candles or use the new flameless candles that are becoming popular.

Sunflower Table

For an upcoming dinner, I've added some sunflower salad plates from Pottery Barn to pick up the colors and theme.  Printed linen napkins in moss green, chestnut brown and gold also add to the texture of the table.  The woven placemats and chargers provide a background of earth tones which bring in a natural, rustic quality.   Rosewood flatware and Moroccan tea glasses filled with encased votive candles lend an exotic touch to the table for visual interest.

How do you like to decorate for early fall?
