Thoughts on Orchids...

Beautiful Phaelaenopsis orchids are known for their elegant arches of blooms on a simple curving stem.  Among the first orchids in Victorian collections, these exotic flowers remain widely cultivated today for their unique shape often thought to resemble fluttering moths, thus the more common name "moth orchid".   A graceful arching habit further accentuates the exotic, artful style of this plant and makes it a lovely choice for an interior accent.

When kept in filtered light and high humidity these flowers can last in the home for 1-3 months depending on the variety.  To keep them healthy, do not over water as root rot is a most common problem.  When blooms begin to fade, clipping the orchid stem with sterilized shears just below the dying blossoms but above a blossom node may help it to bloom again.  Fertilize the plant after clipping and place it in a window with indirect light.  Mist daily and be patient, the second bloom can take several months.
