Star Blossom Blue Hydrangea
April is finally greeting us with thunderstorms and light showers bringing fresh spring air and happy flowers. Always a favorite of mine, this blue hydrangea is in full bloom with large periwinkle blossoms surrounding the plant with color. I was able to get out between showers to photograph and study its unique form. The center and outside petals look like stars bursting open, so I'm calling it my "star blossom blue hydrangea"! In actuality it is Merritt's Blue Hydrangea.
The rich blue of these flowers can be preserved and heightened by maintaining acidic soil with a low pH and then adding aluminum sulfate. If the soil becomes too alkaline hydrangeas like this often turn pink.
Happy April!
