Botanical Sketchbook


Do any of you keep a sketchbook?  I find that one of the best ways to stay creative is to make sketches of what inspires me.  I have a botanical sketchbook that I started filling with colored pencil drawings of different flowers.  It helps me to analyze the way various flowers grow and their colors and patterns.  Then later when I construct more complex works of art I can refer to the sketches for guidance. 

For example, this cymbidium orchid was a gift from my sweet and beloved husband.  It is living in a pot in our kitchen window and proved to be the perfect subject for a sketch.  As I drew it I noticed that the newly opened buds were a lime green whereas those that had been there a while were a rich golden yellow.  As they aged, more orange and brown tones emerged.  Color notations like this are so easily saved in a sketchbook...
