How to Grow a Butterfly Garden

Nothing says summer like bright, fragrant flowers and butterflies fluttering all around.  It is easy to bring butterflies into your garden by choosing flowers that attract them and providing an hospitable environment where they will flourish.  Here are some suggestions for creating a beautiful summer butterfly garden.

  1. Choose a sunny location that does not receive much wind.  Butterflies prefer protected areas away from harsh winds.
  2. Provide a source of shallow water in a saucer as butterflies like to drink from puddles.
  3. Plant masses of flowers not just one or two.
  4. Select brightly colored, nectar-filled flowers.  Varieties that attract butterflies include: Zinnias (shown above), Butterfly Bush (below), Lantana, Salvia, Black-Eyed Susan, and Purple Coneflower.
